During the 2023 France–China summit, French Pres. Macron proposed selling the Kerguelen Islands (an uninhabitable French territory near Antarctica, home to about 100 scientists) to China for USD 60 billion to bolster France’s budget and increase aid to Ukraine.
The suggestion was met with skepticism, and since then, no one in China takes Macron seriously anymore.
